You're using Watchfire Bobby to test whether this site, splintered.co.uk, meets accessibility requirements.
Accessibility is an essential — and often overlooked — aspect of modern web design. More than being an "extra feature", considerations on access for all are an integral part of today's best practices. So, good on you for wanting to see if we're holding up to closer scrutiny.
However — and here comes the rant — Bobby, and any other automated testing tool, can only test for compliance with a small fraction of accessibility guidelines (be they Section 508 or WCAG), and even there the results are often only based on Watchfire's interpretation of said guidelines.
Getting the true measure of a site's accessibility requires thorough testing and a solid grounding in the subject. Paradoxically, sites that may not pass one or two of Bobby's tests can still be classed as accessible...and conversely, we often see sites proudly displaying their Bobby AAA badge even when they are far from even achieving level A compliance.
You've read my initial thoughts on automatic testing and you may be wondering: what should I do, then?
Well, if you are really committed to accessibility I'd suggest familiarising yourself thoroughly with all the documentation available at the W3C WAI site. Start frequenting online discussion boards, such as the Accessify forum, and get involved with the global discourse on accessibility and the interpretation of the — often cryptic — guidelines. And if you're still wanting to test sites, Evaluating Web Sites for Accessibility is an excellent document that outlines the general process you should follow, with lots of handy hints and links to further resources.
