shared bookmarks

In my mind, an interesting use of Torisugari's Bookmarks Synchroniser:

Bookmarks Synchronizer is a Mozilla Firefox extension that let you connect to an FTP server and synchronize your bookmarks that are stored in an XML file.

Initially, I installed the extension for its intended purpose: sharing bookmarks between multiple locations and machines where I use Firefox (the three machines at home – including a roaming wireless laptop – and one at work).

Once I had a file on my server, though, I started pondering the possibility of not only sharing the bookmarks with myself, but to use the extension for a very basic "interesting links of the moment" type publishing system which is directly integrated with the browser.

Not wanting to synchronise all my bookmarks, I set up a new bookmark folder shared. I entered relevant FTP details and the path of the file on the server, and enabled the Auto upload on exit option.

Although not necessary, I added the URL to the shared bookmarks file.

To give visitors more than just a plain XML file, I added the reference to its related XSLT under the extension's "Additional Tag" field. This is now included to the bookmarks file on upload.

So there we have it: by choosing "Synchronise Bookmarks" from the "Bookmarks" menu, I can share bookmarks with both myself and anybody else who is interested in my current ephemeral interests
